Dog beaches in Mallorca: where dogs are allowed – and what to watch out for
Official dog beaches, seasonal rules, leash laws, fines and beach etiquette – plus heat, water and paw protection tips for holidays and life on Mallorca.
Contents
Swimming with your dog on Mallorca is a holiday highlight for many owners. At the same time, dog beach Mallorca rules are strict: there is no single island-wide law – each municipality sets its own rules. Ignore signs and you risk fines and conflict with other beach users.
This guide covers official dog beaches, seasonal access, leash rules, fines, beach etiquette and heat, water and paw care. It is not legal advice – local signage and municipal rules always prevail.
Quick overview
| Situation | Typical rule | Your advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Designated dog beach | Dogs allowed (details on site) | Clear, legal swim day |
| Regular beach, peak season | Usually banned | Dog beach or alternatives only |
| Regular beach, off-season | Some municipalities allow access | Windows vary by town |
| Unsupervised cove | Often grey area – caution | Leash and courtesy |

Seasonal rules: peak vs off-season
Dogs allowed on the beach in Mallorca does not mean everywhere. In peak season (often roughly March/April to October/November) most regular beaches ban dogs except designated dog beaches.
In off-season many municipalities relax rules – examples (always check locally):
| Area | Typical window for dogs on regular beaches |
|---|---|
| Artà | approx. 1 Oct – 30 Apr (often more generous) |
| Alcúdia, Andratx, Pollença, Capdepera | often 1 Nov – 31 Mar |
| Muro | sometimes shorter (e.g. Nov – Feb) |
| Llucmajor, Santanyí, Manacor | often year-round ban |
Leash rules – even on dog beaches?
Leash laws apply in public spaces unless signed otherwise. On dog beaches the municipality decides:
- Some allow off-lead throughout - Others require a leash or proven voice control - Muzzle rules may apply for certain breeds or PPP (potentially dangerous dog) status
Fines and common offences
Controls increase in high season. Typical issues:
- Dog on a forbidden beach in peak season - No poop bags / waste left behind - No leash where required - Disturbing other visitors or wildlife
Fines are set locally – often from around €100, higher for repeat or serious offences.
Behaviour towards other beach users
A dog beach is shared space:
- Remove waste immediately - Ask before approaching unfamiliar dogs - Do not startle children – leash up when busy - Avoid ball games in crowded swimming zones - Reward calm behaviour
Reactive or anxious dogs: choose quieter times or less busy sections.
Water, heat and paw protection
Water & drinking
- Salt water can cause upset stomachs – offer fresh water after swimming - Bring more water than you think
Heat & midday sun
- Avoid 10am–5pm when possible – sand and asphalt burn paws - Five-second hand test on the ground - Shade, watch for heatstroke – contact a vet if needed
After the beach
- Rinse paws after salt water - Paw balm or boots for sensitive dogs - Dry ears on floppy-eared breeds

FAQ
Can my dog swim at regular beaches in Mallorca?
In peak season (roughly March/April to October/November) dogs are banned at most public beaches except designated dog beaches. Some municipalities relax rules off-season – always check local signs.
Is there a leash rule on dog beaches?
Often yes – even official dog beaches may require a leash or allow off-lead only in marked zones. Local signage overrides general assumptions.
What fines apply?
Depending on municipality and offence, often from around €100 upwards – repeat offences or missing poop bags can cost more. When in doubt, use a designated dog beach.
How do I find current dog beaches?
See our dog beach directory for listed beaches and places. Rules change – verify signs on site.
What about heat and hot sand?
Go early morning or late evening, seek shade, test paw heat (5-second hand rule), offer plenty of water. If overheating occurs, move to shade and contact a vet if needed.
